Rising to 19,688 feet (6,001 meters), Mt. Deo Tibba is one of the most iconic and visually stunning peaks in the Kullu Valley. Located in the Pir Panjal Range, this expedition is a significant step up for mountaineers, featuring a mix of high-altitude trekking and technical climbing over glaciers and steep ice gullies.
The journey takes you through the beautiful meadows of Chikka and Seri before reaching the technical sections near the Chandra Tal glacier. The emerald-blue waters of the high-altitude Chandra Tal (not to be confused with the one in Spiti) and the final “Pit” section before the summit ridge make this a thrilling ascent. Reaching the dome-shaped summit rewards you with incredible views of the Indrasan Peak and the sprawling white peaks of the Lahaul and Spiti regions.

A demanding high-altitude expedition in the Pir Panjal range, this journey takes you from the lush green valleys of Manali to the icy summit of Mt. Deo Tibba (6001m). The trail evolves dramatically—pine forests, alpine meadows, glacial lakes, and finally technical snow and ice slopes. Designed for serious trekkers, this expedition blends raw Himalayan beauty with real mountaineering challenges.
Your journey begins in the vibrant town of Manali. After checking into your hotel, spend the day acclimatizing to the mountain air. This is a crucial day for gear preparation and meeting your fellow climbers. Enjoy the local hospitality before we head deeper into the wilderness.
After a short, scenic drive to the road-head, the trek begins. We follow a winding trail through dense forests of oak and pine, crossing sparkling mountain streams. A 2 to 3-hour trek brings us to Chhikka, a beautiful riverside campsite where the air begins to turn crisp.
Leaving the tree line behind, the trail opens into the vast, flat meadows of Seri. Once a glacial lake, this expansive green basin is surrounded by towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls. It is a long but rewarding day of trekking that offers your first real taste of the high alpine environment.
Today we move toward the foot of the mountain. The climb is steady and offers panoramic views of the Chandra Bhaga range. We establish our Base Camp at an altitude of 4,500 m, a vantage point that puts the massive glaciers of Deo Tibba directly in your line of sight.
To ensure a safe and successful summit, we take a mandatory rest day. Use this time to explore the surroundings, practice basic rope techniques, and let your body adjust to the thinning air. The views from this campsite are nothing short of legendary.
The real mountaineering begins today. Following the "climb high, sleep low" principle, we carry essential supplies and technical gear up to Camp 1 (Duhangan Col). This stretch involves navigating moraines and initial snow slopes. We return to Base Camp for the night to aid recovery.
Having established the route yesterday, we move our team to Camp 1. Settling in at 5,100 m, you are now well above the clouds. The evening is spent preparing for the technical sections that lie ahead on the glacier.
A physically demanding day as we move gear to our highest staging point. We navigate the technical "Pit" section and the glacier to reach 5,600 m. After dropping the loads at the Summit Camp, we descend back to the safety of Camp 1.
With the heavy lifting done, we move the team to the Summit Camp. This high-altitude camp is perched on a snow plateau, providing a direct launchpad for the summit ridge. We rest early, as the summit push begins in the dead of night.
The ultimate challenge. Starting under the stars, we navigate steep snow and ice slopes. Using fixed ropes and technical skills, we reach the dome-shaped summit of Mt. Deo Tibba. After witnessing a spectacular sunrise over the Himalayas, we carefully descend back to Camp 1.
With the summit successfully achieved, we begin our descent. We navigate back through the Duhangan Col and return to the familiar comfort of the Base Camp. It’s a day for celebration and reflection on the incredible feat of reaching 6,000 meters.
A long descent that takes us from the high-altitude rock and ice back down to the lush greenery of the lower valleys. We cover 16 km today, ending the trek at the Chhikka campsite for one last night under the stars.
The final leg of the journey. A short 5 km trek brings us back to our vehicle point, followed by a drive back to Manali. The expedition concludes with a warm shower and a farewell dinner as we celebrate a successful summit of Mt. Deo Tibba.
